BFD’s Firefighters Make Special Day More Special For Local Youth
Story from proud Grandmother Jean Piacenza
“Everett started to get interested in fire trucks this past winter when his grown-up friend Jon, a volunteer firefighter in New Jersey, let him get up close to one. He learned the words quickly, and always got big-eyed whenever one would drive by.
Since Everett and his parents began their quarantine on March 15, they have walked to Fire Station 6 every day, sometimes twice a day, even when it has been cold and rainy check out what is happening there and in hopes of glimpsing some action or another. It has become by far and away the family’s favorite destination. Everett practices his words telling what he sees, and then ends his visit the same way every time: “Bye bye, fire trucks, I love you! Thanks for helping people!”
It has been a happy part of some otherwise stressful days. In addition, the daily report occurs later when he Facetimes with his grandparents who live in CT (and miss being in on the adventures in person). He tells them whether the doors were open or shut, which trucks he has seen, etc…The happiness finds its way to New England!
When options for a Everett’s 2nd birthday celebration were limited by quarantine, Fire Station 6 came to the rescue.
We are so grateful to all concerned for making Everett’s birthday so special. And, more importantly, for being at the ready every day to “Help people!”
